How To Train Your Dragon
8 August 2011
The World tour of the How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular comes to New Zealand in April 2012, followed by the North American tour in June.
“In our film, audiences around the world were transported to the mythical world of Vikings and Dragons… and now, we are excited to immerse them in a one-of-a-kind live event in the How To Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, Chief Executive Officer of DreamWorks Animation.
“The innovative team at Global Creatures and the creative storytellers at DreamWorks Animation have done an inspired job in every imaginable way to present this story on an unprecedented scale that will take audiences to unforgettable new heights.
Global Creatures CEO, Carmen Pavlovic, explained “Working with DreamWorks has brought us into a relationship with one of the world's leading entertainment companies. The collaboration fuses our own world-class technology with the vision and dedication of a company renowned for its cutting-edge creativity and storytelling skill. We are excited to expand the boundaries of public expectation by creating a show that combines dynamic creatures, world class performers and incredible staging to not only thrill and intrigue, but to engage audiences on an emotional level as well."
The live production is inspired by the phenomenally successful 2010 DreamWorks Animation film How To Train Your Dragon, which grossed approximately US $500 million at the worldwide box office and was among the best-reviewed movies of 2010. In the How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular, audiences across the globe will have the unique opportunity to experience the world of How to Train Your Dragon in a one-of-a-kind, live theatrical event that promises to break every rule of traditional arena entertainment. In this state-of-the-art production, fire-breathing dragons will soar overhead, immersing audiences in a magical and mythical world of Vikings and Dragons.
The astonishing cast of characters features 24 Dragons, some with wingspans of up to 14 metres, Viking warriors and villagers as well as world-class circus and acrobatic performers. The arena spectacular will feature unrivalled production values, projections, flying, stunts, circus performers, fire and pyrotechnics. In one of the largest theatrical arena productions ever to go on tour, the How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular will require a phenomenal 40 semi-trailers to transport the production whilst on the road around the world.
The How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular rolls fire-breathing action, epic adventure and laughs into a captivating and original story that is set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and is based on the book by Cressida Cowell. It centres on Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.
The Dragons in the How To Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular have been created by Sonny Tilders and his team at The Creature Technology Company (Melbourne, Australia), whose previous work brought to life the stunning, lifelike dinosaurs in Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular. Included in the cast of 24 Dragons are reincarnations of all of the favourites from the DreamWorks Animation film: Nadder, Gronckle, Nightmare, Toothless - the Night Fury and Red Death, which is the single largest animatronic creature ever made by The Creature Technology Company.
Creature Designer Tilders said “The How To Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular will incorporate everything we learned from "Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular" whilst taking the technology to a brand new level. Using state-of-the-art computer software, we are able to make these creatures perform in ways that we previously thought unimaginable. Utilising computer controlled flying systems we have created a show that inhabits the air above as well as the arena floor below.”
The creative team features the World’s best and includes: highly acclaimed theatre director andwriter Nigel Jamieson, multiple award-winning Australian production designer Peter England, and leading theatre, film and opera designer Dan Potra amongst others.
The stunning score features compositions from Icelandic singer-songwriter Jonsi from Sigur Ros and Oscar-nominated British film composer John Powell who created the original score for the Academy Award nominated feature film How to Train Your Dragon.
The How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular is proudly presented in New Zealand by NZ Entertainment & Events Corporation Limited. NZEEC is New Zealand’s leading live entertainment company who recently brought “Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular” to unprecedented acclaim at Vector Arena. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON – ARENA SPECTACULAR CAST OF CHARACTERS
THE DRAGONS:
NIGHT FURY
The rarest and most intelligent of the dragon species, the Night Fury is distinguished by its dark colour and piercing eyes, as well as its smaller size, heavy chest and short neck. Possessing the largest wing-to-body ratio of all dragons, it can fly higher, faster and longer than any dragon.
GRONCKLE
The Gronkle is distinguished by its robust body and relatively tiny wings that can flap with tremendous velocity, endowing it with the ability to fly backwards or sideways. While attacking, the Gronkle smashes and crushes enemies with its extendable tail, or by using its head as a battering ram.
NADDER
Don’t be fooled, because the beautifully coloured Nadder is also extremely dangerous. It is flighty, aggressive, and has a quick and explosive temper, which is made all the worse by its preening vanity.
NIGHTMARE
The flagship of the dragon species, the Nightmare is the most visually terrifying and iconic of known dragon species. Its greatest weapon is a kerosene gel fire.
THE VIKINGS:
HICCUP
It’s not easy being the brainy son of a brawny Viking Chief, but Hiccup is too smart to waste time feeling sorry for himself – he’s going to become a Viking warrior his own way. Unfortunately, in the crude world of Vikings, Hiccup’s sophisticated observations and wry sense of humour only serve to make him even more of an outsider. When Hiccup befriends his vicious enemy, an injured wild dragon, he begins an exhilarating and complicated double life.
ASTRID
Striking, energetic and tough, Astrid embodies the Viking way. Her competitive, determined persona makes her hard to impress, but Hiccup can’t help but be smitten. When Hiccup begins to show the strain of leading his secret double life, Astrid is the first to become suspicious.
STOICK
Stoick is the old-school chieftain of the brawny Viking tribe. A reluctant and confused parent at best, he doesn’t understand his clever son. Hoping to bring out the man in his boy, Stoick sends Hiccup into Dragon training, a dangerous test of battle strength.
GOBBER
Gruff, grump, and crass, Gobber is the seasoned warrior appointed to drill the new recruits. Gobber means well, but he’s full of bad advice, which he dispenses freely and comically.

Jónsi has released and toured the world in support of five studio albums with Sigur Rós, as well as a raft of side projects, including the Icelandic documentary film 'Heima', the Merce Cunningham dance collaboration 'Babatikidido' and the ambient work 'Riceboy Sleeps'. In 2010 he released and toured his first solo album 'Go'. Jónsi is now working on a sixth Sigur Rós studio album at home in Reykjavik.
John Powell – Composer
British-born composer John Powell’s list of film credits exemplifies his ability to transcend genre. Since moving to the United States 13 years ago, he has demonstrated his unique talent by scoring over 46 feature films, including Chicken Run, Shrek, Mr and Mrs Smith, United 93, X-Men: The Last Stand, P.S. I Love You, and Alfie with Dave Stewart and Mick Jagger.
Powell’s ability to compose in a variety of genres stems from the wide array of styles present in his early musical studies. By the time he reached his late teens, he had already been exposed to soul, jazz, rock and world music as well as having a deep classical music background from the age of seven courtesy of his father, a musician in Sir Thomas Beecham’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. In 1986, he began studies in Composition at London’s Trinity College of Music. During his time there, his skill was recognized with both the John Halford and the Boosey and Hawkes Bursary Music College Prizes.
While at Trinity, Powell studied composition, percussion, electronic music, and experimented within the new medium of performance art. He joined the group Media Arts, and with longtime collaborator Gavin Greenaway, composed music and sound for the group’s performances. Although the group disbanded, Powell and Greenaway continued to create many mixed-media installation pieces with artist Michael Petry in the following years.
Powell’s first foray into professional composing came soon thereafter, when he landed a job writing music for commercials and television at London's Air-Edel Music. There, he met other composers including other Air-Edel alumni, Hans Zimmer and Patrick Doyle.
Later, with Greenaway, the two co-founded London-based commercial music house Independently Thinking Music (ITM), where they collaborated on more than 100 scores for commercials and independent films.
Powell shifted his focus away from commercials to longer form composition with the opera “An Englishman, Irishman and Frenchman,” also co-created with Greenaway and Petry.
Arriving in the States in 1997, he immediately scored two DreamWorks TV projects: the second season of Steven Spielberg's High Incident and the pilot For the People. He also arranged songs composed by Stephen Schwartz for DreamWorks' animated feature Prince of Egypt (1998).
But it was Powell's hair-raising score for John Woo’s Nicolas Cage/John Travolta blockbuster Face/Off that garnered critical acclaim and catapulted him into the realm of A-list composers.
Error! Reference source not found.is the recipient of the Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters for Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2011 for his score for How To Train Your Dragon.
